    What is YOUR “WHY” ?

What inspires you when times get tough? What really motivates you to do what you do?

Finding out your “WHY” is a powerful personal development tool.

For any activity (like a career or vocation) that you have a major investment of your self, it is helpful to answer the following questions to further clarify and discover more about exactly WHY you are doing this.

Inevitably there are times of struggle and things don’t always go smoothly.  Frustration and non-useful self-talk can set it.  Matthew Ferry calls it the “Drunk Monkey”.

The voice inside our head — our “Monkey Mind” has been called other things by other people, but we all know this voice that insists that we can’t do something or shouldn’t do something that we want to do.  The voice is scared, and insistent that things remain safe and consistent.

When your mind churns with non-useful self-talk, it is helpful to re-read your answers to your “WHY” questions.  This brings your attention back on your real intent and helps you refocus your energy on what you really want.

If after doing this exercise you have feedback you are comfortable sharing, please comment below.   Some people have interesting experiences doing this exercise.

So here are the questions.  Write down the first thing that comes to your mind. Don’t think about it -  just write down what flows out.

        1.  Why am I really doing this?

        2.  Who supports my success?

        3.  Who needs me to succeed?

        4.  Why me?

        5.  Why not me?

        6.  Why now?
